The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination (Objective Type), Main Examination (Descriptive Type), and Personality Test (Interview).

UPSC Preliminary Examination Syllabus (400 Marks)
The Prelims exam is a screening test consisting of two objective-type papers. Marks from Paper-I are considered for merit, while Paper-II (CSAT) is qualifying in nature (minimum 33% marks required).

UPSC Main Examination Syllabus (1750 Marks for Merit)
The Mains exam consists of nine descriptive papers, of which seven are counted for merit, and two are qualifying language papers.
Qualifying Papers (300 Marks each – minimum 25% required)
Paper A: One of the Indian Languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Paper B: English.
Syllabus for both includes Comprehension, Precis Writing, Usage and Vocabulary, and Short Essays. (Paper A also includes Translation.)
